Instructor Bio

Hi there! I’m Andrew, the Founder of Kaizen Academy.

For over 9 years, I've had the pleasure of teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a passion that started back in 2016 when I began training under Scott Huston at 360 BJJ.

In 2019, I made the move to sunny California, where I continued my journey and was proudly awarded my black belt in 2023.

In addition to my BJJ credentials I have previously held the following certifications;

NASM Certified Personal Trainer
NASM MMA Strength and Conditioning Specialist

At Kaizen Academy, I’m dedicated to building not just a well-rounded BJJ program, but also a vibrant and supportive community.

Whether it's through teaching classes, coaching at tournaments, or organizing family events, my goal is to create a space where everyone feels welcome and motivated.

On a personal note, I’m a proud dad to two wonderful girls, Alana and Ashton, who my wife Jessica and I are raising here in Playa del Rey. You’ll often see them running around the academy, adding to the family-friendly atmosphere we cherish.

I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to our community!

What We Teach

Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Gi)

Our adult Gi classes focus on fundamental technique, positional control, and submission defense. The Gi builds discipline and precision — the details you learn here carry over into every other aspect of your training. Learn more about our adult BJJ classes.

Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (No-Gi)

No-Gi training is faster-paced and without traditional clothing grips found in the gi. No uniform required — just shorts without pockets, zippers or buttons and a rash guard. Explore adult BJJ programs.

Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Gi)

Our kids program is designed for ages 3–14 and focuses on confidence, discipline, focus, and physical fitness through age-appropriate BJJ training. It's one of the most effective tools for helping kids develop resilience and a healthy response to bullying. Learn more about kids BJJ classes.

Who Our Classes Are For

Complete Beginners

Never trained a day in your life? Perfect. Our beginner BJJ classes are specifically designed for people with zero experience. No fitness level required. No flexibility required. Just show up.

Kids and Teens

BJJ is one of the best activities you can put a child in. It builds physical fitness, mental toughness, focus in school, and confidence in social situations. Our kids BJJ program accepts students from age 3.

Getting Back Into Shape

BJJ is one of the most effective full-body workouts available. Students routinely lose weight, gain muscle, and dramatically improve their cardiovascular fitness without ever feeling like they're just working out.

Experienced Practitioners

If you're coming from another gym or returning after time off, you'll find a high-quality training environment with structured curriculum and strong rolling partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get a blue belt in BJJ?

Most students earn their blue belt within 1–3 years of consistent training. At Kaizen Academy promotions are based on knowledge, technique, and mat time — not a fixed schedule.

Do I need to be in shape to start?

No. BJJ will get you in shape. Most students say their fitness improved dramatically within the first few months of training.

What should I wear to my first class?

For your first class, comfortable athletic wear is fine. Once you decide to continue, you'll want to get a Gi (we can point you in the right direction), rashguard, and possibly a mouthguard.

Is BJJ safe?

Yes — when taught correctly BJJ is one of the safest martial arts. Tapping out is always encouraged and respected. Injury rates in well-run BJJ gyms are comparable to recreational sports like basketball and soccer.
