Why proximity is the whole game in BJJ

Here's the unglamorous truth about martial arts: consistency beats everything. The person who trains twice a week for a year quietly passes the person who trains hard for a month and burns out. And the single biggest predictor of whether you keep showing up is how easy it is to get there. A ten-minute drive from Mar Vista is the difference between "I'll go after work" and "I'll go tomorrow" — repeated for years. Living this close is a genuine advantage; use it.

Who trains here from Mar Vista

A real cross-section of the neighborhood: young families with kids in our kids program (ages 3–13), parents who started training after watching from the bench, tech and creative professionals wanting a real outlet, and lifelong gym-goers who hit a wall on the treadmill and wanted a skill instead of a number.

What they share is a room capped at 15 students, taught every class by Andrew Menard — black belt, nine-plus years teaching — with a beginner curriculum built for total newcomers.
