West Los Angeles residents have a world-class BJJ gym 10–15 minutes away. Here's why Kaizen Academy in Venice is the right choice — and exactly how to get there.

West Los Angeles is home to one of the most fitness-conscious communities in the country — and residents looking for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu don't have to look far. Kaizen Academy in Venice is 10–15 minutes from most West LA neighborhoods and offers what most closer options simply can't match: black belt instruction, a structured curriculum, and a genuine community.
If you're in West Los Angeles and you've been thinking about starting BJJ, here's what you need to know: your best option isn't in West LA. It's 10 minutes away on Lincoln Blvd in Venice — and the difference in quality makes every minute of that drive completely worth it.
Kaizen Academy serves students from across the Westside, and a significant portion of our adult students commute from the West LA corridor: Sawtelle, Rancho Park, Cheviot Hills, Palms, and the areas around UCLA and Culver City. They come because what they find at Kaizen isn't available at the options that are technically closer.
From Sawtelle / Japan Town area: Head west on Olympic Blvd to Lincoln Blvd, turn left (south). Approximately 12–15 minutes.
From Rancho Park / Cheviot Hills: Take Motor Ave south to Venice Blvd, head west to Lincoln Blvd, turn right (north). Approximately 12–18 minutes.
From the UCLA / Westwood area: Take Sepulveda Blvd south toward Venice, connect to Lincoln Blvd. Approximately 15–20 minutes.
From Palms / Mar Vista: You're essentially already in our neighborhood. Lincoln Blvd is accessible from any east-west arterial. Approximately 8–12 minutes.
Street parking is available on Lincoln Blvd directly in front of the gym and on adjacent side streets. Most students find parking within a 2-minute walk.
West LA has several BJJ options within its boundaries. Kaizen Academy students from West LA consistently make the slightly longer drive for specific reasons:
Black belt instruction in every class. At Kaizen Academy, head instructor Andrew Menard is on the mat every class — teaching, drilling, rolling alongside students. His black belt credentials, documented competition record spanning 2016–2025, and nearly a decade of teaching experience represent a level of instruction that several options closer to West LA simply don't offer.
Intentionally small class sizes. We cap classes at 15 students. This creates a fundamentally different experience from large commercial BJJ gyms: more individual attention, better drilling partner ratios, and direct instructor access during every session.
A structured curriculum with clear progression. Students from West LA who tried other options before Kaizen consistently mention the same thing: at other gyms, classes felt disconnected. At Kaizen, you can see what you're building toward. The curriculum is coherent and progressive.
A culture that matches West LA's values. The West LA community is active, educated, and community-oriented. Kaizen Academy's culture — ego-free, collaborative, genuinely welcoming to beginners — reflects that rather than the aggressive, hierarchical culture some gyms cultivate.
Kaizen Academy serves the entire West LA family, not just individual adult students:
Our adult BJJ program runs morning, afternoon, and evening classes throughout the week, specifically designed around Westside professional schedules.
Our kids BJJ program serves children ages 3–13 with age-appropriate curricula. Many West LA families have kids in our program and adults in the adult program simultaneously — often in overlapping time slots, making the gym visit efficient for the whole family.
Our beginner classes are structured specifically for adults who have never trained before. No experience, no equipment, no background required.
The short drive from West LA to Kaizen Academy in Venice is worth making once to find out if this is your gym. First class is always free — no contract, no equipment, no pressure.
