Venice Beach has one of the most active surf communities in Southern California. On any given morning, the lineup at Venice and the surrounding breaks draws local surfers who've built their entire lifestyle around time in the water.
What a growing number of those surfers have discovered: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the best thing they've ever done for their surfing — and for everything else.
The Physical Overlap Is Remarkable
Surfing and BJJ develop many of the same physical qualities through completely different movement patterns.
Hip mobility and rotation. Both sports depend heavily on hip mobility and the ability to generate power through rotational movement. BJJ's hip escapes, guard work, and sweeping motions develop exactly the hip mobility and strength that surfers need for bottom turns, cutbacks, and duck diving.
Core strength. Surfing requires a strong, stable core for everything from paddling to maneuvers. BJJ develops functional core strength through constant positional tension and movement — not through crunches or planks, but through real dynamic loading.
Breath control. Both sports require the ability to stay calm and functional when breathing is restricted — under a wave, under side control. BJJ training specifically develops the ability to breathe deeply under physical pressure, a skill that translates directly to hold-downs in the surf.
Body awareness and proprioception. The constant positional awareness required in BJJ — knowing where your body is in space relative to your opponent — is exactly the kind of proprioceptive development that improves surfing performance.
The Mental Overlap
Both surfing and BJJ reward the same cognitive qualities: reading a dynamic, constantly changing situation; making fast decisions with incomplete information; staying calm when the environment becomes chaotic; and the willingness to be uncomfortable in pursuit of a moment of flow.
The BJJ concept of "surviving" a bad position until an opportunity opens is remarkably similar to the surfing concept of riding out a close-out set until the water calms. Both require patience, composure, and trust in your preparation.
Surfing isn't the only practice that pairs naturally with grappling — see how BJJ and yoga complement each other for Westside cross-trainers.
The Venice Community Connection
Kaizen Academy is located on Lincoln Blvd — a short ride from the Venice and El Porto breaks. Several of our students surf before morning class and train BJJ after. The two practices complement each other naturally in terms of scheduling and physical demands.
If you're a Venice surfer looking for a dry-land practice that makes you better in the water and gives you a community outside the lineup, come try a class. First one is free.
