When parents ask what their 3-year-old will actually learn in a BJJ class, the honest answer surprises most of them. Not submissions. Not joint locks. Not anything you'd recognize from a UFC broadcast.
What toddlers learn at Kaizen Academy in Venice, CA is something far more foundational — and far more valuable at their stage of development. Here's the inside look at what our toddler program actually looks like, what kids learn, and what parents can realistically expect to observe.
Why BJJ for Toddlers?
The case for introducing physical martial arts practice at ages 3–5 isn't about competitive development. It's about the window of neuroplasticity that makes early childhood the optimal time to develop foundational movement patterns, body awareness, and the earliest forms of physical self-regulation.
Children who develop strong proprioception — awareness of where their body is in space — early have advantages that persist across all physical activities throughout their lives. BJJ's ground-based movement is particularly effective for developing this quality because it requires constant, specific spatial awareness that most children's activities don't demand.
What Toddler Class Actually Looks Like
Kaizen Academy's toddler program for ages 3–5 is built around movement games, cooperative exercises, and the earliest fundamentals of grappling — all delivered in a format that a 3-year-old brain can genuinely engage with and enjoy.
Classes are short (30–40 minutes), high-energy, and structured around engagement rather than formal drilling. A toddler class at Kaizen looks more like organized play than martial arts training — intentionally so. The BJJ is embedded in the play, not imposed on top of it.
The structure is deliberately flexible. Some days the class follows the curriculum closely. Some days a game captures everyone's attention and the instructor follows that energy while keeping the developmental goals intact. At this age, buy-in is everything — a child who loves coming to class is learning even when the structure is loose.
What Toddlers Actually Learn
Body awareness and coordination. Rolling, tumbling, balancing, and the specific BJJ movement patterns introduced at this age develop proprioception and motor coordination that benefit children across all physical activities — from other sports to playground interactions to the physical confidence of everyday movement.
Safe falling (ukemi). Learning to fall safely and roll out of falls is one of the highest-value physical skills any child can develop. Children who learn proper breakfalls early have dramatically fewer playground injuries and develop a lifelong relationship with falling that removes fear and prevents injury.
Listening and following sequential instructions. A structured class environment with a qualified instructor requires children to listen carefully, follow directions in sequence, and wait their turn. These executive function skills transfer directly to preschool and kindergarten — and parents consistently report teachers noticing the difference.
Partner awareness and cooperation. Working with a partner in a physical context — taking turns, being aware of your partner's body, giving and receiving touch appropriately — develops social and physical awareness simultaneously. For many toddlers, this is one of the first structured experiences of physical cooperation.
Early BJJ vocabulary and positions. By the time a child from the toddler program enters the kids class at age 5–6, they already have a conceptual foundation that newer students their age don't. They recognize positions, they understand basic mat etiquette, and they're comfortable with the physical and social demands of BJJ class.
What Parents Observe Over Time
First month: Your child is learning how to be in this specific environment. Focus comes and goes. This is completely normal and expected.
Months 2–3: Routines establish. Your child knows what to expect and begins to genuinely look forward to class. Listening skills begin to show up noticeably at home.
Months 4–6: Movement vocabulary expands. You'll see them practicing rolls and falling safely during play at home. The BJJ community becomes part of their social world.
6 months+: Real physical confidence. Children who've been in the toddler program for 6+ months move differently than peers who haven't — more aware of their bodies, more comfortable with physical challenge, more adaptable in novel physical situations.
A Note From Parents
"My son takes the toddler class and Andrew is an excellent teacher. He strikes the right balance of appealing to the playfulness of the kids while teaching them the fundamentals of jujitsu. My son loves it." — Sara W., Venice
"We started at 3.5 years old. She's now 5 and moving into the kids class. The transition was seamless because she already knew the environment, the instructor, and the culture. Best decision we made for her early physical development." — Parent, Marina del Rey
